Captain America
Le retour d'Italie s'est fait sans encombres (il y a maintenant plusieurs mois!), et je travaille sans cesse à de nouvelles planches. Ces jours-ci, il s'agit d'une anthologie au sujet du Soudan, produite en collaboration avec des bédéistes italiens. J'aurai bientôt dix planches à afficher; patience!
Entre-temps, je suis fier d'annoncer que mon nouveau design pour le concours (officieux) sur Captain America, organisé par le site Project Rooftop (http://www.tencentticker.com/projectrooftop/2010/10/04/captain-america-fighting-styles-winners/) a reçu des critiques très favorables! Je me suis classé dans les dix premiers, ce qui n'est pas mal du tout si on considère qu'ils ont reçu plus de 150 soumissions.
À venir : les dix planches du projet pour le Soudan!

Back from Italy without a hitch (a few months ago, in fact), and working hard on the newest pages. These days, it's for a pro bono anthology about life in Sudan, in collaboration with Italian comic artists. The ten pages for that project will be online soon, promise!
In the meantime, my submission for the Project Rooftop Captain America redesign contest was very well received: I was in the top ten, which isn't half bad considering they got over 150 submissions! SUMMIT (final)
Me voici arrivé à la fin de l'année scolaire en Italie. Plus que deux semaines avant ma soutenance de projet devant le comité de profs... et encore deux projets à terminer. Je suis néanmoins plein d'espoir et de satisfaction, parce qu'au moins, ENFIN, j'ai terminé les planches de Summit.
J'ai dû me retenir de recommencer la coloration à zéro, parce que j'ai fait d'énormes progrès depuis le début, et franchement je sens que c'est à refaire. Mais ça attendra, et peut-être que ça ne se fera jamais, parce que je vais de l'avant; pas le temps de regarder en arrière. Par contre, ç'a été tout un défi de garder le style de coloration du début... je pense quand même y être arrivé.
Alors voici les planches finales (il reste quelques modifications mineures à faire avant la soutenance, mais elles devront attendre). Et oui, tout est en italien. Les versions anglaise et française n'existent pas encore, et seront réservées à des demandes spéciales.

I really had to hold back from starting the colour from scratch - I've gotten much better since the beginning of the project, and I feel like it should be redone. It's going to have to wait for now, though, 'cause I have to move forward, and there's no time to look back. Keeping the colouring style to what it was initially has been a huge challenge, but I'm pretty sure I pulled it off.
So the above pages are the end result (with some minor changes to make before the presentation, but they can - and have to - wait). So yeah, they're all in Italian, 'cause I haven't gotten around to lettering the French and English versions, which will be only available by special request.

Torino Comics
Moi qui pensais m'arrêter seulement quelques heures à Torino Comics pour acheter une ou deux bédés... les deux journées passées au festival ont porté fruit de manière décidément inattendue. J'ai reçu non moins de trois offres de travail (dont une de traduction et deux d'illustration), ce qui n'est pas pour me déplaire, et j'ai dû me livrer à un exercice de traduction simultanée.
Non, ce dernier n'était pas prévu, mais bon, je me suis bien marré, et j'ai pu rendre service à l'école, ce qui fait toujours plaisir. En fait, l'interprète attitré ne s'est pas présenté pour une conférence sur feu le fondateur du festival d'Angoulême, Claude Moliterni, et je me suis porté volontaire pour combler le vide.
Divertissant.
Passons! J'ai aussi terminé ma version du nouveau costume de l'inénarrable Captain America, non sans les conseils de l'eccentrique Francesco Mattina (grand réalisateur de couvertures pour Marvel et DC et, par un heureux hasard, mon prof de Photoshop et de bédé américaine). J'espère que ça plaira aux juges!
J'ai aussi colorié le superbe costume conçu par mon ami et camarade de classe Andrea Malgeri (un nom à surveiller pour la bédé, à mon humble avis), mais par respect pour les droits de l'artiste, je ne l'afficherai pas ici; par contre, s'il est sélectionné par Project Rooftop, je mettrai un lien vers l'image en temps et lieu.

Here I was, thinking I'd only stop a few hours at Torino Comics to buy a comic or two... but the two days spent at the festival certainly bore unexpected fruit. I received three, count them three offers for comics projects (one of which is translation, while two are actual illustration), which obviously pleases me a great deal, and had to step in to translate a short conference.
Of course, it wasn't planned, but I had fun and managed to help out the school in the bargain, which is always nice. What happened was that the interpreter for the conference on the now-deceased founder of the Angoulême festival (Claude Moliterni) never showed, so I took on the job (pro bono, as always).
Good times.
On to other things! As you can see above, I've also completed my redesign of the one and only Captain America, partly thanks to the advice of the eccentric Francesco Mattina (great cover artist for Marvel and DC, who also happens to be my Photoshop and American comics prof). I hope the judges appreciate the new look!
I also coloured the wonderful design created by my friend and classmate Andrea Malgeri (whose name will be one to watch in coming years, IMHO), but out of respect for the artist, I won't post it here. However, should it be chosen by the Project Rooftop crew, I'll post a link to it then.

Black Canary!
Bon, je m'explique, parce que là, sinon, je passe pour plus détraqué que je le suis vraiment : Project Rooftop fait régulièrement des concours de mise à jour de personnages établis du monde de la BD américaine. Ils ont fait Iron Man, Batman, Superman, et j'en passe; le dernier concours portait sur Black Canary, personnage d'apparence on-ne-peut-plus banale, et j'ai eu envie de me lancer dans l'exercice.
Ç'a été extrêmement relaxant et amusant, si bien que je prévois présenter une autre soumission pour le prochain concours, qui porte sur nul autre que Captain America.
Pour ce qui est de la dame, j'ai toujours trouvé qu'un personnage qui A) se balade tout le temps en moto sans avoir de super-pouvoirs protecteurs et B) est censé se livrer à des prouesses en arts martiaux devrait avoir un costume plus pratique et moins révélateur, tout en restant le plus libre possible.
Mon prototype se veut un hybride entre l'armure des motocyclistes et un costume de ninja, en quelque sorte. Mais en outre, j'ai cru bon maintenir le seul élément iconique de cette supernana (qui n'a par ailleurs aucun symbole personnel), c'est-à-dire les bas en filet. C'est idiot, mais sans ça, ce n'aurait pas été Black Canary.
Vous pourrez admirer les merveilleux motifs d'inspiration ornithologique sur sa combinaison, seul moyen que j'ai trouvé pour distinguer notre héroïne d'une quelconque autre motonana (néologisme de moi). Les chaussons qu'elle a aux pieds devaient forcément être plus légers que des bottes de moto pour cette férue d'arts martiaux.
N.B. : La moto, bien que dessinée par moi, n'est pas de mon invention. C'est une Ferrari.
La prochaine mise à jour sera soit le Captain America, soit des images de mes projets d'école, c'est promis.
Alright, so here's the thing, lest everyone think I'm even farther gone than I really am: Project Rooftop holds monthly-ish redesign contests for various established characters from North American comics. So far, they've covered Iron Man, Batman, Superman, and others, the latest being Black Canary, whom I've always thought to look boring as all hell, and I was inspired to throw my two cents in.
It's been remarkably soothing and fun - so much so, in fact, that I'm going to make time to redesign Captain America himself for their next context, which pertains to that most iconic of American superheroes. Should be fun.
As for the lady, I've always held that a person who A) spends a lot of time fighting crime on a motorbike without protective superpowers, and B) is supposed to be a master of martial arts, should have a much more practical and less revealing costume, which should nevertheless remain as flexible as possible.
My design was meant as a hybrid between motorcyclist armour and a ninja outfit, basically, though I thought it best to keep the only iconic part of her current outfit (which, as you may have noticed, has no defining symbol): the fishnets. It's dumb, but otherwise there would be nothing to tie the costume to the character's image up to now.
Do note the lovely avian-themed motifs on the suit: they were the only workable idea I had to make her different from any other leather-clad biker chick and make her more heroic. The footwear is intentionally much lighter than biker boots, for the kung fu action.
Sadly, though I drew the bike, it's not a design of mine, it's a Ferrari.
I swear the next update will be either the Captain America redesign or more material from my school projects.

Summit
Car c'est bien là le titre de l'oeuvre en devenir. Voici donc la page couverture et la deuxième page du travail.
Si le résultat paraît moins peaufiné, c'est que tout le monde à l'école (y compris le soussigné) a été pris à la gorge par les dates de remise. Les profs eux-mêmes ont dû admettre que le programme a fait trop de détours pour nous donner le temps de tout faire.
Je suis donc un peu moins satisfait du résultat que pour la première page, mais peut-être encore PLUS satisfait d'avoir terminé. À suivre : les troisième et quatrième pages... mais pas tout de suite.
De fins observateurs constateront peut-être que la deuxième page n'est pas dans la même langue que la première, et oui, c'est voulu.

The result may seem a little less refined, and for good reason: everyone (including myself) has gotten a little overwhelmed with the deadlines. Even our teachers conceded that the course load was poorly managed by the school.
So I'm a little less satisfied with the end result, but oddly MORE satisfied to be done. Still to come: the third and fourth pages... but not now.
The more observant readers may notice that the second page is not in the same language as the first. That is, in fact, supposed to be the case.

Angoulême!
Bon, alors pour l'instant c'est le chaos total pour le pèlerinage à Angoulême : tout le monde est pris à la gorge, personne n'a fini le projet en entier. Le retard n'est pas pour l'école, mais bien pour le festival, sauf qu'il n'y avait aucune exigence réelle, donc...
J'ai une seule planche entièrement terminée, mais je n'en suis pas mécontent. Le plus beau, c'est que je sais ce que j'ai mal fait, et comment le corriger à l'avenir, notamment au niveau de l'efficacité.
Pour la petite histoire, le TIFF final atteint 275 Mb, et environ 100 calques. C'est la plus grosse image que j'aie produite à ce jour.

Well, the days leading to the trip to Angoulême are a bloody mess - no one's done the entire project, and anxiety reigns. We're still on track for school, just not as far as we'd like for the festival... it's no big deal.
I only have the one page entirely done, but I'm pretty happy with it. The best part is knowing what I've done wrong and how to correct it, especially in terms of efficiency.
Fun fact: the final TIFF is the single largest image I've worked on, clocking in at 275 Mb and roughly 100 layers.
